Ram . How to Choose an Air RatchetPneumatic tools are great to have around the shop, because they can speed up your workflow, and make you work more efficiently. Of course, there are lots of different tools out there, with lots of different uses and applications. One of the most versatile tools is the air ratchet, which can be used in lieu of a traditional hand ratchet, to speed up removal and installation of hardware. But there are a lots of different types of air ratchets out there, so how do you choose the right one? A few little tips will guide you along the path. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Air compressor Step by Step : 1 Locate the information label on the side of the air compressor. This should tell you how many CFM, or cubic feet per minute, the compressor is able to produce, which will be key to a good performing air ratchet. The higher the number, the more options that you have. 2 Look around at different models of air ratchets and find a model with a lower CFM requirement than the compressor that you have. If your compressor can put out 2.2 CFM, a 2.2 CFM air ratchet or lower can work just as well. A 2.4 CFM air ratchet would run out of power quicker than usual, and may not be as useful. 3 Note the decibel rating, or DB rating, for the air ratchet. The lower the number, the quieter the air ratchet. An air ratchet is known for putting out a high-pitched squeal when operating, so if you live in a neighborhood where the noise would be a problem or you don't want to hear the noise in general, look for a lower DB rating. There are air ratchets labeled as "quiet" models, and that may be a good option if you have sound restrictions. 4 Note the length of the air ratchet. The longer the ratchet, the more difficult it would be to maneuver into tight spaces, but the trade-off is generally in performance. Consider your needs for the tool, and weigh your options to find the best length for your needs. 5 Note the performance of the ratchet. The higher the revolutions per minute (RPM) and the higher the torque numbers, the more powerful the ratchet will be. If you anticipate taking off lots of difficult-to-free nuts and bolts, a higher torque number is going to be best. But if you're taking apart bolts without a lot of holding power, a lower torque number will work. 6 Check to see if the ratchet is reversible. Not all air ratchets are reversible, meaning that some just go forward to tighten nuts and bolts, and others just reverse out the hardware. It's usually best to get a model that is reversible, that way you have a more versatile tool. ResourcesSnap-on Air RatchetsMac Tools air ratchets
Ram . How to Replace Air Conditioning CompressorsModern cars and trucks are manufactured with air conditioning systems that use an engine driven compressor to circulate freon through a condenser and evaporator. The compressor can fail due to a lack of lubricant or mechanical damage, but replacing it is a direct procedure for most vehicles; the average backyard mechanic can replace an A/C compressor in about an hour. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Line wrench Step by Step : 1 Have the air conditioning system evacuated at a collection facility, such as a garage or oil change center. The freon coolant can be an environmental hazard, and requires professional equipment to collect. Most places will perform the initial evaluation for free as they get compensated to collect the freon. 2 Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise. Set the open terminal aside, not touching any metal. 3 Turn the freon line nuts on the compressor in a counterclockwise direction and remove them from the compressor openings. There may be a slight hiss of latent pressure. Store the lines away from the compressor, but leave them connected to the rest of the system. 4 Press firmly on the tension pulley arm and slide the primary drive belt from the idle pulley. Release the arm and there should be enough slack to slide the belt from the compressor pulley wheel. 5 Disconnect the compressor from the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug from the terminal on the compressor. 6 Turn the compressor mount nuts counterclockwise while holding the bolts with a second socket wrench. Slide the bolts from the mounts and the compressor can be manipulated from the engine compartment. 7 Replace the compressor by positioning it between the mount arms and sliding the bolts through the mount arm holes. Fasten the nuts and tighten them in a clockwise direction while holding the bolt heads with a second socket wrench. 8 Reattach the freon lines to the compressor by turning their line nuts clockwise until they are snug. Inspect the gaskets on the lines prior to securing them. 9 Wrap the drive belt around the compressor pulley wheel, groove side down. Press the tension pulley arm firmly and slide the drive belt underneath the idle pulley wheel. Reconnect the compressor to the wiring harness by pressing the adapter plug onto the compressor's terminal. Step by Step : 10 Reconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt clockwise. Step by Step : 11 Refill the system with the proper level and type of freon by using DIY equipment (a can of freon with a twist valve), or taking the vehicle to the collection facility for refilling. Tips & Warnings Do not vent the freon into the atmosphere. Use extreme caution when working with freon recharge home kits, freon can freeze skin in seconds. Use protective gear such as latex gloves and face masks. If you attack immediately on the assumption that they're out to get you, you'll put them on the defen sive and make things much harder for yourself. Getting satisfaction on any complaint I learned the following technique from an excellent human-potential trainer, and I pass it on to you. It's based on this "Golden Rule": The best way to get what you want is to maintain a friendly attitude in all disputes — and refuse to be swayed from your purpose! Follow these steps to get satisfaction: 1. Before you contact anyone, decide exactly what you want done. Presenting a specific plan for remedial action is much more powerful than waiting passively for someone else to decide what they're willing to do for you. 2. Time your campaign carefully. 1006

Someone who's hungry or eager to get home won't want to spend a lot of time trying to help you. ~ Try calling 24-hour customer-service numbers in the middle of the night. Chances are they'll be grateful for a bit of diversion. 3. Approach the proper person in a friendly way, assuming that he or she will do everything possible to settle the issue fairly. To find out which person to approach, see the next section, "Climbing the complaint ladder." 4. Open with a bit of friendly conversation. The key is to establish a relationship as human beings. If the person you encounter goes into robot mode, it's even more important to get through to his or her essential humanity. If possible, get on a first-name basis. 662 Ram . Very few were taught to expect friendliness, trust, and compassion. When they encounter it, their battle tactics are useless. 5. Clearly state the problem and what you'd like the person to do about it. Tell your story as though you were talking to a sympathetic friend, with out blaming anyone. Keep it as short as possible, and don't cloud the issue with unnecessary details. 6. Be prepared to back up your request with as much documentation as possible. This is why it's so important to keep maintenance records, invoices, guarantees, and warranties. If you're asked to document your case, never part with your originals; just Ram . Showing that you care about the person's problems will encourage him or her to care about yours. 8. In a friendly fashion, keep reiterating your problem and what you want them to do to rectify the situation. Say things like, "Gee, that's really a problem. I know how hard it must be to deal with something like that — and what can you do to help me?" Be reasonable.
